Dr.R.S.Giraddi, working as Principal, PGP College of Agricultural Sciences, Namakkal hails from Dharwad in North Karnataka, born in 1958 in the Second most populous city of Karnataka, Hubli. He completed his B.Sc and M.Sc (Agri) from UAS Bangaluru and Ph.D in Agrl. Entomology from UAS Dharwad, with Junior and Senior Research fellowship of ICAR for PG education.
He started his academic service at UAS, Dharwad in 1984 and became professor in 2003. During his mid-career, he was awarded with the prestigious Common Wealth Academic Staff fellowship of UK government through British Council and ACU London during the year 1997. He worked at Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Foods, UK govt Institute at york, for a period of one year on “Soil fauna Ecotoxicology”. He has offered many UG and PG courses during his service and introduced a new course on “Biological Waste Re-cycling” for the first time at UAS Dharwad for both UG and PG students. He has guided 20 M.Sc(Agri) and 05 Ph.D students as major advisor, besides acting as member for more than 80 students.
As a researcher, he has got many credentials, being recognized at National and International levels. He was instrumental to introduce, popularize and commercialize field scale biological organic waste re-cycling for the first time in North Karnataka and University, leading to production of organic agri-inputs. He and his PG Students are first in India to do DNA finger printing of earthworms and assess genetic diversity in earthworm species of south India through independent and Ph.D research. Besides, he contributed enormously in developing technologies for the advancement of agricultural practices to grass roots.
IPM in Red chillies (in CV: Byadagi chillies which is of high export value), Management of Pests in Soybean, Chickpea and protected crops like bell pepper, pole beans, rose, carnation are important. He established successfully crop nourishment as an important tool of IPM in various crops, through his decade of research. Insect diversity in conventional, organic and conservation agriculture, bio-physical and bio-chemical basis of pest resitance (Doctoral and M.Sc research) etc are his other important research contributions. As recognition to his research contributions, he was awarded with Dr.M.Puttarudriah Memorial Endowment National award for outstanding work in plant protection in India (2014). The confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and Indian Citation Index listed him as one of the top 100 authors in India (18th Rank) for his research productivity and higher citation index. During his academic and research career he got sanctioned funded projects by CAPART, DBT, DST, NABARD and worked for GOK projects.
He has got good international exposure in attending Trainings and Conferences in England (1997-98), wales in UK (2002), Nepal (2014), Taiwan and Hongkong (2016), and Australia (2018). He was member of PRT of ICAR for Accreditation of Agriculture University in Maharastra, worked as Chairman for promotion of Scientists in ICAR Institutes, and acted as member of selection committees for TNAU, Coimbatore, MPKV Rahuri, UHS, Bagalkot and UAS Dharwad.
As an administrator, he worked as Dean of Agricultural College, UAS Dharwad (2015-18) and College of Agriculture, UAS, Raichur (2012-15) in Karnataka. He was instrumental in adoption and implementation of 5th Dean’s Committee recommendations of ICAR. The college of Agriculture Dharwad during his tenure bagged maximum JRF awards, making the University to secure 1st and 2nd rank positions at National level (2016-18).
He has published more publication than 200 research articles in National and International periodicals, 05 Books out 05 Book chapters, the latter being published by the University. He has written more than 50 popular scientific articles in English and Kannada Newspapers. Besides he has presented more than 50 research papers in National and International symposiums and conferences.
